Sustainable Cards: How to Choose the Right Material

Sustainable cards: what materials say about your brand

There is a precise moment when a brand stops being an abstract idea and becomes something tangible: when it enters people’s everyday lives. Sustainable cards — loyalty cards, gift cards, payment cards, badges and access keys — are among the most concrete objects a company places in its customers’ hands. They are small, pocket-sized and silent. Yet every time they are used, they communicate something.

That is why the choice of material is never neutral.

In a market where companies are judged not only by what they produce, but also by what they consume and discard, choosing certified or recycled materials is not a matter of green appearance. It is a matter of coherence. Brands that declare a commitment to sustainability — retailers, banks, institutions, associations — cannot afford to use card materials that contradict the values they promote. In this sense, the card becomes one of the most tangible touchpoints where an environmental promise is either confirmed or weakened.

But choosing sustainable cards does not mean giving up quality, aesthetics or performance.

Publicenter has been working on this balance for years: developing lower-impact materials that can maintain the technical performance of traditional PVC, in terms of durability, print quality, lamination and compatibility with chips and magnetic stripes. Its solutions — recycled PET-G, recycled PVC, cardboard card and wooden cards — are designed to offer real alternatives without aesthetic or functional compromises. They simply require a more conscious choice from the start.

And, increasingly, this is a choice the market itself is beginning to expect.

Sustainable cards in recycled PVC: when a product’s past becomes a card’s future

PVC is not sustainable by nature. But it can become more sustainable.

rPVC, or recycled PVC, comes from a process that recovers existing material, selects it, washes it and reintroduces it into the production cycle. The starting point is not a virgin resource, but material that would otherwise become waste. Publicenter works with post-consumer rPVC cards: end-of-life products that are brought back into use while maintaining technical characteristics very close to those of traditional PVC.

Very close, not inferior. High resistance, long durability, print quality, compatibility with chips, magnetic stripes, RFID and advanced personalisation make rPVC the right choice when a card needs to be used frequently, last over time and deliver reliable performance.

In the banking sector, this transition è already underway. Mastercard has set the goal of eliminating virgin PVC plastic from new cards across its network by 2028. Publicenter has obtained the renewal of the Mastercard Card Eco Certification for its sustainable cards in rPVC — a concrete signal that sustainability and the technical standards of the financial sector can coexist.

Recycled PET-G cards: greener by nature, not just by choice

Before talking about recycling, it is worth understanding what makes PET-G different.

Unlike PVC, PET-G contains no chlorine and does not require plasticiser additives to be processed. This makes it an intrinsically lower-impact material and a safer option to manage at end of life. While traditional PVC is more complex to recycle and dispose of, PET-G is recyclable by nature, not only through corrective intervention.

It is a better starting point. And Publicenter started from there.

By using recycled PET-G, the environmental profile improves even further: the structural advantages of the material are combined with the recovery of existing resources, reducing dependence on virgin raw materials.

The result does not require visual or technical compromises. Offset and screen print quality, thermal stability, physical resistance, transparency effects and special finishes: a recycled PET-G card is almost indistinguishable from a traditional plastic card. People may not immediately see the difference when they hold it. But the difference is there.

This makes recycled PET-G an ideal solution for loyalty cards, gift cards, membership cards and promotional cards: contexts where visual impact matters, the product must perform and choosing sustainable cards means turning environmental commitment into something concrete and measurable.

Eco-friendly FSC cardboard cards: the right choice for retail and promotions

Some cards are created for a seasonal campaign, an event or a promotion. They have a specific purpose, a defined life cycle and are often part of a broader brand experience. In these cases, cardboard is often the most coherent choice: lightweight, recyclable and easy to integrate with packaging, displays and coordinated communication materials.

Publicenter offers its ECO CARD, one of the most versatile eco-friendly cards for retail and promotional projects, with FSC Chain of Custody certification. This certification guarantees the traceability of forest-based materials from the tree to the finished product.

It is the right solution when the card has a short life cycle, when it supports a purchasing experience or when consistency with sustainable packaging becomes part of the message itself. A card that is flexible, leaves an impression and can be disposed of in a way that is coherent with its function.

Wooden cards: natural design that tells your brand story

The first time you touch a wooden card, you immediately understand that it is not a card like any other.

The texture, the weight, the warmth of the material: every detail changes the relationship between the person receiving the card and what it represents. Even before sustainability, wood communicates perceived value. It suggests care, craftsmanship and authenticity. It conveys positioning before the brand name is even read.

Publicenter has also developed the Wood Card in a Black version, designed for brands that want to combine the natural quality of the material with a more sophisticated and elegant aesthetic. It is a suitable choice for premium memberships, hospitality, clubs, high-end gift cards and limited editions: contexts where the sustainable card is not just a tool, but part of the experience the brand wants to create.

Sustainable cards: how to choose the right material for a premium experience

Sustainability is not simply chosen from a catalogue. It is built around a project, a context and the role the card needs to play.

recycled PVC, recycled PET-G, cardboard and wood are not materials designed for one sector only. They are solutions that can adapt to different markets and uses: from banking to retail promotions, from premium memberships to seasonal gift cards. The right choice depends on concrete variables such as expected durability, integrated technologies, aesthetic goals, certification requirements and product life cycle.

A few questions can help define the best direction. How long should the card last, and how intensively will it be used? Does it need to integrate technologies such as chips, RFID or magnetic stripes? Is it part of a temporary campaign or an ongoing program? Should the brand communicate a premium identity or a stronger connection to natural values?

Publicenter supports this process with a range that covers the full spectrum of sustainable materials, together with the technical expertise needed to guide each company towards the most suitable choice. Because the right material is not necessarily the greenest in absolute terms. It is the one most coherent with what the brand wants to be — and with what its sustainable cards need to say.
